Postcard from Report The Violence Campaign

Police GLBTI Liaison Officer poster

Anti-homophobia poster - thanks to Regurgitator. Poster says:
We all dance to the beat of a different drum so why pick on people just because they are not the same as you. People suffer when your actions are homophobic.

PROJECTS
EDUCATION
PROJECT
The AVC is committed to providing education
on why people should 'say no to homophobic violence / homophobia'
in the twin cities. So far we have provided training to Service
Providers, amongst them are Lifeline telephone counsellors
at all stages of their training , JCU medical students and Youth
workers. We have also provided training to high school students,
and teachers at government and independent high schools. Other groups
that we have worked with are young male detainees and young men
attending groups at lifeline. We have also provided training with
Police recruits at the North QLD Police Academy as well as the GLBT
Liaison Officers.
GLBT
LIAISON OFFICER PROJECT
In conjunction with the Queensland Police
Service we are developing the regional GLBT Liaison Officer Project.
At present there are five (5) serving Police Officers fulfilling
this community policing role. There have been four (4) community
consultant group meetings so far where GLBT Police Officers, service
agency providers and community members meet for round table discussions.
All are welcome at these meetings. They happen
every first Tuesday of the month, 9am at the Migrant Resource Center,
Flinder Street, Townsville. For more info. contact the AVC.

VOLUNTEERS
We have formed an alliance with Volunteering
Townsville/Thuringowa Corporated and most of our volunteers have
been recruited from this agency. The volunteers are working
on a number of projects listed on this page as well as staffing
information stalls, administrative tasks and the AVC library. Anybody
wnating to volunteer some time and energy can contact us by phone,
email or just drop in. We have a few exciting projects for you to
work on.
SAFE
PLACE PROJECT
We all have the right to go about our daily
lives in safety. In reality the world is not always a safe
place. Homophobic harrassment and violence exists and safety
is important. The Safe Place project is one means of addressing
safety in our communities through the GLBT Anti-Violence Committee.
The Safe Place Project is establishing a network of business/organisations
known as Safe Places. Safe Places are not only GLBT friendly
environments, they also provide a haven for those who are in fear
of their safety. People accessing a Safe Place can expect
non-judgmental help in returning to a feeling of safety and can
access referral numbers for GLBT related issues.

REPORT
THE VIOLENCE CAMPAIGN
The AVC has set up a centralised reporting
system where members of the public can report crimes of violence,
anonymously if they wish. In conjunction with crime stoppers,
we have also set up a file where people can report crime details.
We have also worked with local Police in the Townsville community
by the sharing of information. Look out for the bright pink
postcards in a GLBT friendly store near you. For more info click on this LINK or Visit: www.walksafe.org for report form
